Not even in a game. City gamers reject Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as it 'promotes terror'

This may go down the history of gaming as the most controversial video game ever.

The much-awaited Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which goes on sale from today, has not only ruffled feathers abroad; it may be boycotted by Delhi gamers as well. Most gaming enthusiasts in the city feel the game is irresponsible, 'as it promotes terrorism'.

Though the game has been declared the biggest blockbuster of the year,u00a0 Delhi gamers are concerned.

Priyadarshi Singh,u00a0 a student of Delhi University and an avid gamer,u00a0 said, "We play brutal games but not at the cost of plotting a terror attack. The new game may be accepted globally but being an Indian I am not new to terror attacks and their havoc."

Even professional gamers are aghast. Prateek, a professional gamer, said, "Selling the game on the name of terrorism is unethical. The game has attractive graphics and animation but it is certainly going to affect gamers as it is very real. I will not support it."

The game's almost real look is making gamers uncomfortable. Another gamer Ajay Chauhan said, "The game is so real that it is bound to leave an impact on a gamer. The gamer is always a hero killing bad guys. But the footage of this game indicates it will cast players as one of the killers and make them shoot civilians. One of the scenes shows the player stepping out of an elevator with four terrorists, who fire at a crowd. The player joins in and is seen shooting the wounded as they try to crawl away to save their lives."

The Other Side
In a statement, Activision, the developer of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, said:
"Modern Warfare 2 features a deep and gripping storyline in which players face a terrorist threat to bring the world to the brink of collapse. The game includes a plot involving a mission carried out by a Russian villain who wants to trigger a global war. In order to defeat him, the player infiltrates his inner circle. The scene is designed to evoke the atrocities of terrorism. At the beginning of the game, players encounter a mandatory 'checkpoint' where they are warned that an upcoming segment may contain disturbing elements and they can choose not to engage in the play that involves this scene. Consistent with its content, the game has been given an 'M' certificate for 'Mature' by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. The rating is prominently displayed on the front and back of the packaging, as well as in all advertising."
