With no respite in sight, privileged commuters have to get into long queues

The elite silver and gold card lanes at the Delhi-Noida-Delhi (DND) Expressway toll have not been functioning for


a few days. And privileged commuters are already feeling the heat as they queue up in the regular lanes to pay toll tax in cash.




Under the premium system, by paying an extra fee, commuters can buy silver and gold plastic cards that allowed them to pass through the toll booth without halting.

"This is not the first time that the card-swiping system has been disrupted. A few months ago, we faced a similar situation. And the worst part is that the DND officials took months to sort out the problem," said Neeraj Kumar, a software developer, who commutes between Delhi and Noida everyday.

"During rush hours, the queue at the toll booth is so long that we have to wait for more than 20 minutes," fumed Sahil kumar, who works for a multinational bank in Delhi and was waiting for his turn to pay the toll at 9.30 on Wednesday morning.

"Since the problem started, whenever I swiped the card, the card reader remained blank. Now, thankfully it displays 'card not accepted'. But I am sure the server will debit the amount from my card," said Rajesh Roshan, a senior sales manager of a Delhi-based consumer good firm.

While commuters fumed, DND officials dismissed the issue as "upgradation work". But they failed to specify the time needed for the 'upgradation'.

"Due to upgradation, the entire system has been shutdown. But we cannot give a specific timeline for it to get re-established" said Niranjani Pahadia, the DND spokesperson.

The DND Flyway website is not functioning as well. A message posted on the site says, "Website under maintenance, request for recharge/new card received till 15.30 hours on January 12, 2009 has been processed for updation, others will have to wait. Sorry for the inconvenience." That's the simple DND solution.
