Opposition calls for debate on Constitution in both houses of Parliament

Opposition leaders on Tuesday have urged for a debate on the Constitution in both Houses of Parliament stressing that recent developments have raised concerns over constitutional values and rights in the country, the PTI reported. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said on Tuesday that he and Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, have formally requested a two-day discussion on the Constitution.  Kharge emphasised the importance of this debate, “Time should be allotted for that so that the good things about the Constitution can be discussed, and the wrong things that are happening today can also be discussed. Rahul Gandhi ji and I have written letters, we are waiting for the government's response,” he told PTI.  Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh raised questions regarding the implementation of the Constitution’s Preamble, asking, “Are people getting justice, liberty? Is there freedom of expression? Where is fraternity? Only bowing to the Constitution will not lead to it being followed.”  Singh also criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) slogan 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas, Sabka Vishwaas, Sabka Prayaas' and said "It will happen when confidence is instilled in every citizen from every community. Mr Prime Minister, follow what you are saying. Practice before you preach." "Incidents like Sambhal are repeatedly occurring. I am surprised that even Supreme Court judges and our retired Justice Chandrachud overlook the laws of this country and state that surveys are permitted as it is a matter of faith... Every individual in this country has equal rights to practice their religion and faith. The growing disharmony is a threat to the nation," Singh told PTI. Violence broke out in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal on Sunday during a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, which a petition had claimed was the site of an ancient Hindu temple, stated PTI. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi highlighted that previous debates in Parliament have been held on significant anniversaries, such as the 125th birthday of B.R. Ambedkar and the 75th anniversary of Bharat Chhodo Andolan (Quit India Movement). "We want both Houses to have a debate on the Constitution for two days so that all MPs get an opportunity to show their dedication to the Constitution and the country can see it," Gogoi told PTI. "So both Leader of Opposition in both Houses have written to the Chair on this... It will send a good message to the country. We have discussed with all opposition leaders," he said. Union Minister Chirag Paswan slams Congress for killing Constitution during 1975 Emergency, watch video: PTI stated that Congress Lok Sabha MPs K Suresh, Gaurav Gogoi and Manickam Tagore also met Speaker Om Birla over the demand for two-day discussions to celebrate 75 years of the Constitution.  (With inputs from PTI)

Maharashtra election results not acceptable to anyone: Patole

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole on Tuesday refused to accept the Maharashtra Assembly election results, saying that the "EVM issue" is not being taken seriously, reported the ANI. "Whatever election results have come, they are not acceptable to anyone, not even to the people of Maharashtra," Nana Patole told ANI. "So we have brainstormed on this issue and if you see social media in Maharashtra today, the public says that the government has not come with our votes, so the Congress party has always respected the sentiments of the public," Patole said. He said that no one is listening to the problems raised by the people of alleged mismatch of votes, leaving a mass movement to be the only option left for them. "No one is listening on this (EVM issue), we also went to the Supreme Court, they said to prove it. Public sentiment says that we give our vote to X but it is being marked in the name of Y, so no one is listening to the problems. So it seems except a mass movement there is no other way," he added. Meanwhile, Nana Patole also met with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party's MP Ravindra Chavan from Maharashtra's Nanded, to discuss the performance of state's assembly election, and the bypolls. In Maharashtra, Congress won the Nanded Lok Sabha by-poll. But, surprisingly the party lost all the six assembly segments in the Nanded Lok Sabha seat to the BJP and Shiv Sena. Ravindra Chavan of Congress trounced BJP's Santukrao Hambarde by 1,457 votes after a recount. Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) winning candidate from Mumbra-Kalwa assembly seat, Jitendra Awhad said that he is 'unable to find any reason' for the Maha Vikas Agadhi(MVA) coalition losing the election, and questioned the claims of Ladki Bahin Yojana being the reason for Mahayuti landslide victory. "We are unable to find any reason (for our loss) because things have only gone bad after the Lok Sabha elections, prices have risen, unemployment has increased, we find it hard to believe that Ladki Bahin Yojana has made them win," Awhad said on Monday, as per the ANI. He further said that many of the winning MLAs have also claimed Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) being faulty. "Even our winning MLAs have said that the EVMs were faulty," he added. CCTV shows man hurling explosive outside rapper Badshah’s Chandigarh club

Two explosions took place outside two popular clubs in Chandigarh on Monday night, with CCTV footage revealing a man throwing suspected crude bombs at the locations. The blasts occurred near the Seville Bar and Lounge, owned by renowned rapper Badshah, and the nearby De Orra Club in Sector 26, sparking concerns over possible extortion attempts, according to police officials. The explosions, which occurred between 2:30 am and 2:45 am on Tuesday, caused significant damage to the window panes of both establishments. CCTV footage from the area shows a man throwing what is believed to be crude bombs at the clubs before fleeing the scene. The visuals from the site of the incident showed shattered glass from the windows, while structural damage was reported to the buildings. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the explosions were of a low intensity. The Chandigarh Police swiftly responded to the scene, with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) also arriving at the location. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. Initial reports suggest that the incident could be linked to an extortion attempt, but there is also speculation that it might have been related to a dispute between the partners of the two clubs. According to the police, the explosions were concentrated outside De Orra Club, which is located near the Seville Bar and Lounge. Both clubs are situated around 30 metres apart from each other. The police have also engaged bomb detection teams and forensic experts from the Chandigarh Forensic Science Laboratory to assist with the investigation. They are currently gathering samples from the blast site to help identify the perpetrators. In response to the incident, Badshah, the well-known singer and rapper, has yet to make an official statement. However, the police are working diligently to track down the suspects and understand the full extent of the situation. With CCTV footage providing key evidence, authorities hope to make progress in solving the case. As the investigation continues, the authorities are focusing on identifying the individuals responsible for the attack and determining whether the motive was indeed linked to extortion or if another factor was involved. The incident has raised concerns over safety and security at entertainment venues in the city, as the police work to prevent further occurrences. (With inputs from agencies)

Rashmi Shukla reappointed as Maharashtra DGP, days after her transfer

IPS officer Rashmi Shukla has been reappointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra on Monday. Earlier, she was transferred by the Election Commission of India (ECI) ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections on November 4. The development came days after the Election Commission ordered the immediate transfer of Rashmi Shukla from her position as DGP Maharashtra. The poll body directed the Chief Secretary to hand over her charge to the next senior-most IPS officer in the cadre. The election in Maharashtra concluded with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti alliance registering a resounding victory. The alliance won 230 out of the 288 seats in the state assembly. The results that were announced by the ECI on Saturday stated that the BJP won 132 seats, while its allies--the Shiv Sena, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, secured 57 seats, and the NCP, led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, won 41 seats. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) faced a major setback. The Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, won 20 seats; Congress managed 16, and the NCP(SP), led by Sharad Pawar, secured just 10 seats. Meanwhile, amid a tussle over the post of Maharashtra Chief Minister, Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, and NCP chief Ajit Pawar are expected to meet BJP National President JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah later tonight. The trio will be attending a private event in the national capital before meeting the BJP's top leadership to discuss government formation in Maharashtra, according to sources. Amid the ongoing discussions, two-time Chief Minister and current Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is seen as a strong contender to occupy the top post for the third time. However, Shiv Sena leaders insist that Eknath Shinde should continue as Chief Minister. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. "Turbocharge innovative power of youth": Amit Shah praises cabinet's Rs 2750 cr

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday praised Cabinet's decision to approve Rs 2750 crore for the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) 2.0, stating that the scheme will 'turbocharge' the innovative power of the youth. In a post on X, the Union Home Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the decision. "The Union Cabinet's decision to approve the Rs 2750 crore Atal Innovation Mission 2.0 initiative will turbocharge the innovative power of our youth by extending the culture of thinking out of the box to new regions and fields," his post on X reads. "Thanks to PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji for the visionary initiative," the Union Home Minister added. Earlier in the day, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the continuation of its flagship initiative, the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) under the aegis of NITI Aayog. The initiative has an enhanced scope of work and an allocated budget of Rs 2750 crore for the period until March 31, 2028. According to an official release, AIM 2.0 is a step towards a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) that aims to expand, strengthen, and deepen India's already vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. The approval underscores the government's commitment to fostering a robust innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in India. With India at rank 39th on the Global Innovation Index and being home to the world's third-largest start-up ecosystem, the next phase of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM 2.0) is expected to further elevate India's global competitiveness. The continuation of AIM will directly contribute to creating better jobs, innovative products, and high-impact services across sectors. While building on the accomplishments of AIM 1.0, such as Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) and Atal Incubation Centres (AIC), AIM 2.0 marks a qualitative shift in the mission's approach. Whereas AIM 1.0 involved implementing programs that built innovation infrastructure to strengthen India's then-nascent ecosystem, AIM 2.0 will pilot new initiatives designed to fill gaps in the ecosystem and scale successes through central and state governments, industry, academia, and community. AIM 2.0 is designed to strengthen India's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in three ways, including increasing input, improving the success rate, and enhancing the quality of 'output,' the release said. Additionally, the Union Cabinet has also approved "One Nation, One Subscription," a new central sector scheme for providing countrywide access to scholarly research articles and journal publications. Information and Broadcasting Minister, who briefed the media on the cabinet decisions, explained that the scheme will be administered through a simple, user-friendly, and fully digital process. This will be a "One Nation, One Subscription" facility for the government higher education institutions and R&D laboratories of the central government.
