Cops say the man who crushed labourers to death in Noida on Monday night was driving under the influence of alcohol; death toll rises to four

The driver of the Swift car which crushed four, including a six-year-old boy late on Monday night in
Noida, was in an inebriated condition.

Cops said property dealer Rahul Gupta was high on alcohol when he crushed four labourers sleeping on a footpath and injured as many at Sector 39, Noida. Till Monday night, the death toll was three till the police recovered the body of another labourer, Sant Lal, early on Tuesday morning.

According to the police, a Maruti Swift car rammed into a roadside makeshift dwelling and crushed eight people, out of which four died on the spot. The four injured were rushed to a district hospital where their condition is still critical. The accident took place barely 800 metres away from a police station.

An eyewitness, Rajpal, said the speeding car climbed the pavement, where about 15 people were sleeping.

Rajpal said the car first crashed into a hutment where three people were sleeping. It then allegedly hit the second dwelling where four others were sleeping. "The car was travelling at a high speed and as soon as I saw it coming towards me, I jumped towards the canal to save myself. It happened in a second," Rajpal said.

The three people killed have been identified as Ram Milan, 30, Sumara, 26 and their son Ashok, 6.

The police said the victims were casual labourers laying cables for Reliance Communications and were staying on the pavement.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police, Noida, Ashok Kumar Singh, the injured have been identified as Rajesh, Bobby and Bhuria. "The driver of the car, Rahul Gupta, was drunk when the accident happened. He also suffered some injuries and was taken to the hospital for first-aid," said Singh.
