We are working towards not just making a memorial, but a place of inspiration for whoever visits the Balasaheb Thackeray Rashtriya Smarak,” said Uddhav Thackeray, former Maharashtra CM and son of late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, at a press meet held in the city on Saturday.

To make this possible, Thackeray made a vehement appeal to people to send in all memorabilia connected with the senior Thackeray, including his speeches, and special memories held on to by common people, to “gather memories of Balasaheb” for the upcoming memorial in his name. It will be ready for public viewing by December 2023. The presser, which also had Aditya Thackeray in attendance, was held days before the commemoration of Bal Thackeray’s 10th death anniversary, which falls on November 17.

The MMRDA, which is implementing the project at the old Mayor bungalow near Shivaji Park in Dadar, has already started construction work for the memorial, which is 58 per cent complete now. Shiv Sena politician and secretary, Balasaheb Thackeray Rashtriya Smarak, Subhash Desai, said the state government is also lending its support to the project.
