A 19-year-old woman, Gargi Chate, lost her life after her friend, Sayam Sakala, 22, lost control of the car they were in and hit a divider on the Coastal Road on February 8. The Tardeo police have registered an FIR against Sakala and collected his blood samples to determine whether he was drunk at the time of the accident.
The driver and the victim were heading to Churchgate. However, Sakala lost control of the car, leading to the accident. Gargi Chate and Sayam Sakala were rushed to Breach Candy Hospital. The doctor declared Chate dead, while Sakala is undergoing treatment in the hospital,” a senior official from Tardeo police station told mid-day.

“The accident occurred at around 8 pm. We suspect that the driver was speeding and failed to notice the turn after Haji Ali. The car collided with the divider and then overturned three times. We are investigating the matter,” the police stated. Chate’s body was handed over to Nair Hospital for post-mortem analysis, which revealed that she died due to a head injury.
“She was a first-year management student at a reputed college and had come to Mumbai for studies. She hails from Nashik, and her body has been handed over to her father. The family is in a state of shock due to her sudden demise,” an officer said. “Sakala lives in Dadar and was preparing for his Chartered Accountant examinations. Currently, he is undergoing treatment as he is injured,” the officer said.
“Prima facie, it doesn’t appear that Sakala was drunk, but we have taken his blood samples and sent them for analysis,” the officer added. Sakala has been booked under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash and negligent driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
New Northbound bridge connecting Mumbai Coastal Road to Worli-Bandra Sea Link inaugurated
The new northbound bridge connecting the Mumbai Coastal Road Project to the Worli-Bandra Sea Link was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on January 26 in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Minister Ashish Shelar, and Mangalprabhat Lodha.
The bridge developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will open for motorists on January 27.
According to the BMC’s estimates, motorists can now complete a single journey from Bandra to Nariman Point in 18 to 19 minutes. The road will save 75 per cent in travel time and 34 per cent in fuel consumption.
The road is part of the western coastal corridor of Mumbai. With the Nariman Point to Bandra stretch completed, work is in progress for the Bandra to Versova sea link.
The newly constructed bridge spans 827 meters, including a 699-meter section over the sea and a 128-meter approach road. It features a 2,400-metric-ton bow arch string girder connecting the Coastal Road to the Sea Link. Traffic from Marine Drive to the Sea Link will use the northbound bridge from 7 a.m. to midnight, while the southbound bridge will handle Bandra-to-Marine Drive traffic as usual.
