A doctors' body has threatened they will launch a stir if the Maharashtra government fails to take action against the Shiv Sena MP who made dean Dr SR Wakode clean toilets amid outrage over Nanded hospital deaths. In Nanded's Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital, 31 patients have died in 48 hours, including 16 infants.

Amid the outrage, Shiv Sena MP from Hingoli, Hemant Patil, visited the hospital and made the acting dean SR Wakode clean a dirty toilet and urinals and a video of the same went viral on social media.

The Maharashtra chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), according to a report in PTI, stated in a press release that they have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde demanding necessary action into the treatment meted out to the acting dean.

The IMA (Maharashtra) president Dr Ravindra Kute was quoted in the report saying that the medical fraternity also wants a proper investigation to be held into the tragic incident that unfolded at the Nanded hospital.

The report cited the release which read, “All these patients were admitted in critical condition at the Nanded hospital which is a tertiary care centre. We request for proper inquiry. However, the treatment given by the local politician and MP to the dean and the HOD of the medical college is not justifiable.”

The IMA claimed that the number of staff at the hospital is inadequate considering the huge footfall of patients.

Their memorandum stated, “We will be forced to launch a statewide agitation if necessary action is not taken.”

The memorandum came even as a First Information Report was filed against Patil based on Wakode’s complaint. The MP has been charged for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties and defaming him.

Patil and nearly 10-15 others have been booked under Indian Penal Code section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 500 (defamation) and 506 (criminal intimidation), as well as provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Reportedly, Wakode said that the viral video of the MP making him clean the toilet has defamed him. He also said that Patil made him clean the toilet in ward no 6 of the hospital which led to an increase in his blood pressure.
