Mumbai Rains: City on Yellow Alert for second day in a row

Rain activity likely to continue with same intensity as Tuesday; lull period from Thurs till Sept 25

Mumbai city on Tuesday received moderate spells of rainfall with heavy rain occurring in some parts of the city. The pattern is likely to continue on Wednesday due to convection occurring in the lower levels of the clouds and cyclonic circulation in its upper levels.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously issued a Yellow alert for Tuesday and Wednesday. An IMD official said, “The rainfall pattern in Mumbai city on Tuesday evening is likely to be seen on Wednesday as well. This rainfall is occurring because of local convection in the lower levels of the clouds. Our satellite images also show that there is a multi-layered cloud patch over the city as well as a cyclonic circulation in the upper levels of the clouds.”

Lull starts on Thursday

An IMD official said, “There is a cyclonic circulation occurring in the upper levels near Vidarbha and Marathwada. This will be moving north-westwards towards Madhya Maharashtra, so this region, along with the ghat areas, is likely to receive rainfall over the next few days. Nandurbar, located in the northernmost part of the state, is likely to receive moderate to intense spells of rainfall along with thunderstorm activity for the next few days.”

However, the official further stated that there would be a lull for a few days till September 25 as the current low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal would exit. “Another such area will form sometime around September 25 and will cause rainfall activity to increase,” the official said.
