Mumbai: One person killed after fire breaks out in slum near Bhayandar

The fire started at around 6 am in the Azad Nagar slum near Bhayandar, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Commissioner Sanjay Katkar said

One person was killed after a major fire broke out in a Azad Nagar slum near Bhayandar in Maharashtra's Thane district neighbouring Mumbai on Wednesday morning, destroying several huts and shops.


One person died and several others were injured in the incident. The fire is now under control.


According to police officials, the fire broke out around 4:30 am at the Azad Nagar slum. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The fire brigade rescued dozens of people who were trapped at the scene.


The occupants of huts and other residents of the locality ran out of their homes after the blaze erupted. They immediately informed to the fire and police officials about the fire incident, and the fire team arrived at the scene with 24 fire engines to extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control after a few hours.

A charred body was found at the site and sent for post-mortem to a government hospital, MBMC's disaster management cell chief Narendra Chavan told PTI.
