A businessman from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, was arrested recently for abetting the suicide of a Charkop-based broker.

According to police sources, in March 2021, the victim had died by suicide after jumping in front of a train near Borivli station. The accused, identified as Chinayya Reddy (30) had failed to pay Rs 81 lakh to the broker after buying clothes from him which pushed the victim to kill himself.

Reddy was arrested from Vijayawada on February 19 and brought to Mumbai. He was produced before the court on Monday and was remanded to police custody till February 25.

According to Borivli GRP officials, Reddy had got the mobile number of the victim from an acquaintance. He had then called up the victim and placed an order for clothes worth Rs two lakh. After the delivery, Reddy had paid the amount and then when he had established trust with the victim, he again placed an order of Rs 81 lakh in September 2020.

Reddy had promised to pay the amount in three months, however, when he failed to do so, the victim went to Andhra Pradesh to meet him but had to return empty-handed.

Following severe losses in business due to this the victim died by suicide.

GRP officials had recovered a suicide note from his pocket stating that he had not received the Rs 81 lakh-amount from Reddy due to which he was taking his life.

Following an investigation, the police team reached Andhra Pradesh and arrested Reddy on the charge of abetment of suicide.

"We have arrested Reddy and produced him before the court today. He was remanded police custody till February 25,” said senior inspector Anil Kadam.
