A 43-year-old mentally ill man allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well at the BMC ground on Tank Road in Malad west. The incident took place at around 10:30 am on Wednesday.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Jitendra Popat, a resident of Nirawala Chawl in Malad West. He was into sales business.

Popat has three brothers. For the past few days, his mental condition was not good and he was undergoing treatment. On Wednesday morning, he left the house on the pretext of work and took the extreme step. Some children, who were playing at the ground, informed the locals, who informed Malad police. A fire brigade team rushed to the spot.

The well is deep and was filled with water. The fire brigade team pumped out the water and Popat was pulled out at around 2:20 pm. He was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead, said a police official.

“No suicide note has been found. During the investigation, it has been found out that Potat's mental condition was not good and he was undergoing treatment,” said senior inspector Dhananjay Ligade of Malad police station.

An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered and the body has been sent for autopsy to Bhagvati Hospital, Ligade added.
