Mumbai records 929 fresh infections while state sees 20,740 new cases

Even as the second wave of the pandemic loosens its grip on the state, Mumbai recorded less than 1,000 fresh Covid-19 cases on Friday. While it saw 929 new infections, 30 deaths due to the virus were recorded over the past 24 hours. Also, for the first time in the second wave, the city’s Test Positivity Rate (TPR) dipped below 4 per cent (3.14) on Friday.

May 20 was the first time in the second wave when the TPR had gone below 5 per cent. On May 21, the TPR was 4.28.
On May 18, the city for the first time in the second wave had registered daily new Covid-19 cases below 1,000. However, Mumbai saw a significant rise in the daily new cases, including fatalities, later in the week. The doubling rate continues to improve significantly and is currently 370 days.

Of the 30 deaths in Mumbai, 14 patients had comorbidities, 16 deaths were of patients above 60 years of age and eight deaths were of those in the 40-60 age group. The city’s recovery rate has improved and was 94 per cent on Friday. A total of 1,239 people were discharged after full recovery.

Maharashtra saw a marginal drop in new cases on Friday. As per the state government’s report, 20,740 new cases were reported across Maharashtra. The state also saw a marginal drop in Covid-19 fatalities and witnessed 424 deaths.
The state’s case fatality rate has been rising steadily and was 1.64 per cent on Friday. A total of 31,671 patients recovered and got discharged on Friday. The state has 2.89 lakh active cases.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) too reported a marginal drop in new cases. The MMR saw 3,033 cases on Friday, including the ones reported in Mumbai. Apart from Mumbai, Palghar saw 388 cases and Raigad 587. Thane reported 199 new cases while Kalyan-Dombivili saw 156 cases and Navi Mumbai 114.
