The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Mumbai’s minimum temperature will witness a dip over the weekend. According to the IMD and independent meteorologists, cool northern winds heading from the Himalayas towards the western parts of the country are responsible for the chill.

The temperature in Mumbai and adjoining areas has already dropped below 20 degrees Celsius. The Santacruz observatory, which covers suburban Mumbai, registered a temperature of 16.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The Colaba observatory recorded 19.4 degrees Celsius during the same period.

IMD has predicted that the lowest temperature in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas is likely to drop to 16 degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours. IMD officials also hinted that by the weekend, there is a possibility of the temperature dropping below 14 degrees Celsius in Mumbai and adjoining areas.

“As per current weather models and existing systems, a significant dip in the temperature is expected starting this weekend. We will get a more clear indication of the further dip in temperature by January 13,” said an official from IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre. Vagaries of the Weather, a popular private weather blog, predicted that Maharashtra’s cooling down will begin from January 13. “The coolest period would be between January 13 and 16,” said blogger Rajesh Kapadia.

Kapadia added, “After a bout of snow and rain in the Himalayas and northern states, the nippy cold winds have started to blow into Maharashtra and central India. Hence, Mumbai and adjoining areas are getting the wintry feel once again. The maximum or daytime temperature will be around 26 to 28 degrees Celsius with cool breezy weather, whereas nighttime minimum temperature is likely to dip to around 13 degrees Celsius to 14 degrees Celsius from January 14.”

A weather enthusiast, who goes by the handle IndiaWeatherMan, tweeted, “In the next few days, Mumbai and most parts of Maharashtra will witness pleasant weather. Around January 13-14, Mumbai is likely to see the lowest temperatures of the season at 14 degrees Celsius. The suburbs around the national park and Thane interiors will dip to 11 to 12 degrees Celsius. Even days will be comfortable at 28-29 degrees Celsius.”
