Daily Covid-19 cases in the city have once again started to climb, but the test positivity rate (TPR) has dipped below 5 per cent, for the first time since the second outbreak of novel Coronavirus, and the doubling rate of infections has also improved.

On Tuesday, cases had fallen below 1,000 in Mumbai, but went up again the next day. It increased further on Thursday, when the BMC reported 1,425 new cases and 59 deaths. The jump has been attributed to increased testing. Of the 59 deceased in Mumbai, 43 patients had comorbidities, 39 were aged above 60 years, while 18 were in the 40-60 age group.

The TPR on Thursday was 4.91 per cent as compared to 5.31 per cent on Wednesday. It has been steadily falling after May 5 when it was 10.96 per cent. Last week, the TPR dropped below 7 per cent. The doubling rate has continued to improve significantly and is now at 297 days.

The recovery rate in the city has improved to 93 per cent, and 1,460 people were discharged after they recovered from Covid-19.

Unlike Mumbai, Maharashtra on Thursday registered a dip in new cases at 29,911 .

However, there was a significant rise in Covid-19 fatalities as the state reported 738 deaths on Thursday. Explaining the sudden spike, a senior state health officer said, “Of the 738 deaths, 429 occurred in the last 48 hours and 309 in the last week. As the reconciliation process of deaths up to May 13 was completed today, there is an increase in the number of deaths in various districts. Which is why the state’s total tally increased by 246. Non-Covid-19 deaths reduced by 33.”

The state’s case fatality rate is now 1.55 per cent, and 47,371 patients were discharged. Currently, the state has 3.83 lakh active cases.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) reported a marginal rise in new cases with 3,767, including the ones reported in Mumbai. Besides Mumbai, Palghar with 336 and Raigad with 578 reported the maximum new cases in the MMR.

Vasai-Virar reported 221 new cases, Kalyan-Dombivli 271 and Thane 208. The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered 109 deaths, out of which 43 were in Raigad, highest after Mumbai. Palghar reported 21 deaths, while Vasai-Virar 10, Thane eight, Navi Mumbai six and Kalyan-Dombivli 10.
