Earlier this week, as the Higher Secondary (HSC) board exams kicked off, Shiny (40) and her son David (17) were in action again David appearing for his first paper while his mother was sitting outside the examination centre, engrossed in reading a textbook. Her own Class 12 board exams are scheduled in March.

MiD DAY had reported in June 2012 about how the Kandivli residents gave their National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Class 10 board exam together with Shiny securing 54 per cent and David scoring 48 per cent. This year David is appearing for his HSC board exam so that he can complete his graduation from a mainstream college.
“The State Board certificate adds weightage to one’s academic record,” he says. Shiny will appear for her Class 12 board exams through the NIOS board. While David’s exams started on February 21 and will continue till March 24, Shiny’s exams begin on March 27.
“Every day my mother makes sure I leave for college at 9.30 am while she leaves for work at around the same time. We both remember and cherish the time when we studied together for our first board exam. Now we study separately but egg each other on,” says David.
Shiny, too, is equally excited. “Though I’m appearing through the NIOS board, my tension is not less. I have to leave for work at 9.30 am every day. I return at 5.30 pm, cook and do household work. I do my studies whenever possible, sometimes at night and sometimes on the train while going to work. I have decided to complete my graduation now so I can earn more some day,” she says.
Amazingly, even as David says his mother inspires her, Shiny says her own mother Leelamma Mathew (62) is her inspiration. “She encouraged me to study hard and complete my graduation. Of course I keep a watch on David’s studies too. I have to make sure he does well and makes us proud,” she says. But as most citizens will agree, both mother and son are doing Mumbai proud with their inspiring story so far.
