Birthday boy Akshay Karpe and his friend Imran Khan breathed their last while being rushed to JJ hospital; the duo, along with their 12 friends, were on their way to Siddhivinayak temple after celebrating Karpe’s birthday
This year’s birthday celebrations turned out to be the last one for 22-year-old Akshay Suresh Karpe after he lost his life in a motorcycle mishap in the wee hours of Wednesday. Karpe, along with 13 friends, were on their way to Siddhivinayak temple from Girgaum chowpatty. Another casualty of the mishap was Karpe’s friend Imran Hussain Khan (25).

Senior Inspector Bhausaheb Gite from Kalachowki police station said, “The incident took place around 2.30 am on the Lalbaug flyover. These 14 boys were travelling on six motorcycles from Govandi, where they celebrated Karpe’s birthday. The bike on which the deceased were travelling had another pillion. He escaped with minor injuries. Khan was riding it.”
He added that after the trio’s motorcycle crashed into the divider, and they were flung onto the opposite side of the divider, the bike behind them crashed into their vehicle.
“Three persons were travelling on this motorcycle as well. Two of the riders were identified as Saddam Hussain and Nitesh Ghugey. The third rider sustained minor injuries. Ghugey was riding this bike. None of them had worn helmets,” Gite said.
Karpe and Khan breathed their last while being rushed to JJ hospital. Hussain, who sustained major head injuries, was operated upon and shifted to KEM hospital where he is said to be out of danger. Ghugey and the other injured were discharged after receiving treatment at JJ hospital. Officials said while Karpe was employed at a mobile shop, Khan was a daily wage worker.
“After partying, the boys decided to visit Siddhivinayak temple. On reaching here, they learnt that the temple was shut so they decided to kill time at Girgaum chowpatty. The accident occurred while they were returning to the temple,” said Gite.
Officials have sent blood samples of all the 14 riders to a lab to check whether they were riding under the influence of alcohol. They booked Khan under Section 304 of the IPC.
