The self-employed victim Bina Parekh went to Viramgam in Gujarat on October 18 along with a friend for medical treatment. After the treatment, the victim and her friend visited Ambaji temple near Abu. While waiting in the serpentine darshan queue, Parekh met the accusedu00a0-- 30 year-old Amit Patel and 22 year-old Jinal Patelu00a0-- and had a two-hour long conversation with them. Parekh grew extremely fond of the couple and they exchanged phone numbers. "I had asked the duo to meet me whenever they come to Mumbai. I liked them' they were polite and very respectful towards me," said Parekh. She returned to Mumbai the same day with her friend.

On October 30, the accused called Parekh to tell her they were in Mumbai and wanted to stay with her for a few days. "I readily agreed as they were new to the city, and the only other option was a stay in a hotel. They came home and behaved well all through their stay. I enjoyed their company since I stay alone," she said.

On November 1, Parekh went to the local market to buy milk and other necessities, and on returning was shocked to see the house ransacked. The couple had managed to rob gold jewellery worth Rs 80,000 and Rs 20,000 in cash. Parekh registered a complaint against the couple at Vanrai police station.

"We registered a case against the Patel duo and started our investigation. Their mobile numbers were traced to Anand in Gujarat, and that's where our special team headed to hunt them down. They were arrested on November 8 and brought to Mumbai," said Inspector Kisan Joshi of Vanrai police station.

The couple has been charged under section 380 (Theft in dwelling house) and 34 (common intentions) of the IPC. "We produced them in court on November 9 and they were sent to a five day police custody," Joshi said.
