Woman travelling in Mumbai's local train injures eye after being hit by water balloon near Mira Road Station

Holi is around the corner and with it returns the menace of water balloons being thrown at commuters in Mumbai. A woman who was travelling in Mumbai’s suburban train was injured above her eye after being hit by a water balloon on Thursday.

33-year-old Vaishali Damania, who boarded a train from Bhayander at around 9.30 am, was hit by the balloon while nearing Mira Road station.

Damania was standing on footboard near the door as she apparently was to get down at Borivali station.

Another commuter traveling with her said that Damania didn’t even realize she was huit initially. “It hit her above her eyes and soon after it became red, and she then realized that she was bleeding,” the commuter said.

Damania was taken to Umrao Hospital in Mira Road.

A doctor from Umrao Hospital said, "The patient received minor injuries and she would be discharged tomorrow (March 14)".
Members from the rail commuter associations claim the area between Bhyandar and Mira Road, especially Shanti Nagar, is notorious for such incidents. “I was told by the police that they suspect someone from this area was behind the incident,” said a member of a passenger association.

An officer from Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP) said, “There is no major injury reported and that we have deployed our men around the areas to avoid such incidences in future.”

Throwing water balloons at passengers in moving trains is common in Mumbai during Holi.

Only last year, a couple of commuters fell from a moving train near Bhandup station after a yellow-coloured substance was thrown by unknown men traveling in a train coming from the opposite direction.
