Mumbai crime: Cop, kin booked for dowry harassment

The Kherwadi police have lodged an FIR against a 28-year-old constable from the Mumbai Crime Branch and 10 of his family members for mentally and physically torturing his wife for dowry. After verifying the application received from Sapna Bhavsar two months ago, the Kherwadi police finally registered an FIR against her husband Umesh Bhavsar and his family members on March 29.

In her complaint, Sapna mentioned that she married Umesh on February 22, 2014. Before their marriage, Sapna and her family were told that Umesh was a sub-inspector. But after learning about their lie, Sapna decided to call off the wedding. However, she agreed to marry him after Umesh’s and her relatives intervened and resolved the dispute.

The complainant alleged Umesh demanded that she and her father deposit Rs 1.26 lakh in his father’s bank account. Later, her mother-in-law Pushpa asked her to bring some money from her ‘rich’ parents. But when Sapna refused to do so, Pushpa abused her.

She also accused Umesh of asking her to tell her elder sister of fulfilling his physical needs and threatened to defame her sister if she refused. He also told Sapna to bring R10 lakh from her sister so that he could buy a new house. When Sapna refused to placate Umesh, he thrashed her.

Speaking to mid-day, Sapna said, “One day, he brought his service pistol home and aimed it at my forehead after grabbing my throat. He threatened to kill me and my family members if I complained against him in the police.”

She also alleged that Umesh tattooed his name on her hand during her pregnancy. “I kept screaming while he was tattooing my hand, but he remained unfazed. There had been days when he and my in-laws would lock me in a room and keep me hungry. They tortured me mentally and physically for dowry and giving birth to a girl child.”

The FIR also states that Umesh’s brother Rahul, a police constable, molested Sapna at his police quarters in Nagpada when the couple had gone to him and his family.
