Mumbai: Colleges confused over CET cell's 'caste certificate'

Law education is mired in controversy and confusion again. Colleges have demanded a Rs 100 affidavit from students admitted under the reserved category, binding them to produce the said certificate within six months, upon the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell’s insistence. The cell, which had earlier allegedly insisted on the certificate, has now issued an online circular saying that it is not required.

Srividya Jayakumar, principal of Thane Law College, said, “The CET Cell had made it mandatory for students to submit the caste validation certificate. But when some students approached us with difficulties in acquiring the certificate, I contacted the Konkan Bhawan to get clarity.”

“When I learnt that the office, which issues the certificate, does not have provisions to issue these for law education, it was communicated to CET Cell after which they stopped insisting. A circular was issued in that regard. However there might be old cases of students or some colleges who are still unclear of the situation,” Jayakumar added.

Sachin Pawar, President of Student Law Council, said, “This is happening because of confusion between government and CET Cell. We are demanding a meeting with the Chief Minister to resolve all issues but are not given time.”

mid-day tried to get in touch with CET cell commissioner Chandrashekhar Oak, but he did not respond.
