After students' demands seeking the postponement of law examinations fell on deaf ears at the Mumbai University, a member of the Bar Council of India (BCI) has come to their aide. Former chairperson of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, and member of BCI, Vitthal Konde Deshmukh, will meet varsity authorities today to discuss the issue.

Law students are a troubled lot after finding about their exam timetable. The last round of admissions opened in the last week of December for them, and the varsity has declared that their exam begins on January 17. By the varsity's own statutes, in any course, there have to be 90 days of teaching before an exam. The students say the varsity is not giving them enough time to study for the exam.

The on-screen-marking system and its chaos delayed the academic year's start, but the varsity followed the regular structure to finalise the timetable for this semester-end's exam. Konde Deshmukh said, "Why it is so urgent for MU to take the exam? Students who got admission in the last round will barely get 15 days to study. I'll have to understand the issue to decide if there is a need for litigation."
