A bandage for the art world
Out of sight, out of mind. This phrase, unfortunately, rings true in the art world too. One such case was eminent 80-year-old artist Vasant Wankhede, who succeeded to on Sunday, due to kidney failure.

“He was a marvellous painter but sadly, he was not as recognised as his contemporaries,” rues leading abstract artist Prabhakar Kolte, who has shown many slideshows of Wankhede’s work to his students at Sir JJ School of Art; the institute also happened to be the alma mater of the late artist.

In a career spanning four decades (1965 onwards), Wankhede’s oeuvre comprised black-and-white water-colour works, canvas paintings, collages as well as abstract art using media like bandage and cloth. This became his trademark style.

“He would say that these media reflected his ideas,” shares Kolte about the artist’s minimalist work that has been showcased in galleries across India and in Muscat. “However, he was never interested in promoting himself or even socialising. He was shy and modest, someone who concentrated only on his work,” he recalls.
