Brush strokes for charity
The Nargis Dutt Foundation is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a special art show that will feature works by 35 artists from across India. And, while the likes of Brinda Miller, Ajay De and Prakash Bal Joshi are expected to participate, the show will also see politicians Priya Dutt and Uddhav Thackeray present their works at this exhibition. The show, titled Pigment Colours with Purpose, will also display works by filmmaker Rajiv Menon and documentary photographer, Sudharak Olwe. A hundred art works will be on display at a Bandra five-star. The proceeds from its sale will be channeled towards funding cancer care and rural development work carried out by the foundation. That’s what we call art for a noble cause.

Flowers, fans and filmi bonding
On a humid Thursday evening, when most Mumbaikars were praying to various gods for early rainfall, a suburban five-star hosted “Pride of Maharashtra.” Fifty personalities who were awarded at the Pride of India Summit’s Maharashtra chapter, included individuals from the state who had contributed to education, innovation, and served as an inspiration to the country.

Among the awardees were Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sajid Wajid, Amish Tripathi, Priti Patkar, Zoya Akhtar and more.

The evening was kicked off (albeit, a few hours behind schedule,) by veteran actor Dharmendra, who, after lighting the lamp, made the audience chuckle by admitting that although he had written a long speech, he had forgotten what it contained. “I have come to chat — something you do only with friends,” he said. “Speeches are for formal occasions; aap sab toh apne ho.” However, the veteran paused his sher-o-shaayri waala extempore when Kareena walked in, saying, “Now, since there are more beautiful people in this hall, I’m going to cut my talk short.”

Quite the subtle way to say, “Damn, the show should have started on time.”

Germans go gaga over Pyarelal
It was a matter of national pride for veteran Bollywood composer Pyarelal Sharma when music-savvy Germans at the prestigious Gewandhaus in Leipzig gave him a thunderous standing ovation. They appreciated two Western Classical symphonies, named Om Shivam, composed by Pyarebhai, that were played by a large orchestra, and conducted by eminent musician Kristjan Jarvi. “There was a special Indian touch to the symphony that began with the sound of ghungroos,” says Sharma, who was seated in the audience. Deviating from his usual ethnic kurta ensemble, the desi sangeetkaar wore a formal suit for the evening, we are told. In Rome, do as the Romans?

Raising the bar
It’s the season for new menus, and The Bar Stock Exchange has one too. The bar has grabbed eyeballs for it’s cool concept where patrons could bid for their drinks, with fluctuating prices similar to a stock exchange. The mailer informing us about their menu matched their quirk, and featured GIFs of Chefs Kshama Prabhu and Gaurav Gidwani playing table tennis with a tomato in the kitchen and showering garlic pods on each other! These images were followed by funny GIFs of the new dishes. With Kheema Fries, Nimbu Curry-pata Chicken Satay and Chicken Roulade, it’s worth getting bullish at this exchange, no?
