Traditional sports like kabaddi and mallakhamba might finally get their due with the BMC proposing a 49,000-sqm Olympic-standard sports complex at Veera Desai Road in Andheri West, to host these games. The proposed multi-sports centre will be built at the cost of Rs 19 crore.

In May last year, the BMC had taken over an open plot from its owner that was reserved in the Development Plan 1991 for recreation and sports.

Confirming the development, a senior official from the garden department of the BMC, said, “Currently there is no designated place to play sports like kho kho and kabaddi. The idea is to encourage, promote and provide better facilities for traditional sports.” The complex will also have a cycle track and children’s play area.

He added, “The sports complex will be developed as per Olympic standards and will be open to all citizens. It will also be used to promote local and state-level tournaments. Once work on the complex begins, it will take us at least 18 months to complete it.” The centre is expected to be ready sometime next year.

The proposal for the project will be tabled in the Standing Committee this week for final approval. If approved, this will be the second multi-sports centre to come up in Andheri, as there is already one at JP Road, which is popularly known as Andheri Sports Complex.

The civic body has also planned another sports complex in Dahisar. The proposed 51,000-sqm sports complex in Dahisar will be the city’s biggest and will be ready by 2019.
