The cops are clueless about the reason for Radanpura to commit the crimes, since the accused’s husband owns a perfume shop, and they own a big house in J D Tower at Nagpada. The cops only had her mobile number, which she used to contact jewellery designers.

One of the jewellery designers, Kavita Gogna returned to the city from Delhi and registered a case with Bandra police on September 24. Gogna complained that a woman called Rashida had approached her at her Mumbai exhibition and stole three gold necklaces worth Rs 18 lakh. She gave Rashida’s number to the cops.

An official from Bandra police station said, “The number which we had obtained was the number which she was using only at the times of committing crime. We scrutinized her number thoroughly and got an IMEI number.”

The official further added, “After we got the information of the owner of the phone, we found he worked as a watchman of Radanpura’s society. We interrogated him and learnt that the accused had given him the handset to use for a while. We showed him the CCTV grabs obtained from Bandra, and he identified her.”

As the watchman was being questioned, the secretary of the building alerted Radanpura’s family about the cops arrival and her role in the crime. “However, after this, the accused who had hypertension went to her washroom, and mistakenly consumed some liquid instead of medicines. Following this, her family members took her to JJ hospital and got her admitted,” said an officer.

The accused was admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening and after she was discharged on Thursday Bandra police arrested her. In her confession to the police, the accused claims she sold the necklaces at Zaveri Bazaar for mere Rs 4 lakh.

The accused has been booked under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code. She will be produced in Bandra court today. Cops claim that the accused has committed similar crimes in other parts of the city, which they are trying to verify.
