In a freak accident, a 30-year-old man died after falling from the fourth floor through a lift shaft in an unoccupied MHADA building on Sunday. Miraj Shaikh, a resident of Aurangabad, who had come to meet his friends in Shivaji Nagar, somehow fell in the lift shaft and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to Sion Hospital on Saturday, but doctors declared him dead during treatment on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday, when Shaikh had come to meet Yusuf Khan and his other friends in Mumbai. Khan said that it was usual for all of them – about five of them - to come together every few months and go for dinner. Since Khan’s home is at Natwar Parekh Compound in Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, all the friends decided to spend an evening at his place.

“We went out for dinner that day at around 8.30 pm and came back to our house. After a while, few of the friends suggested that we go to the terrace and sing songs, as well as play games, for which we went to the building opposite ours,” said Khan.

While climbing up the stairs, Shaikh was right behind Khan, followed by other friends. Khan said that on the fourth floor, Shaikh suddenly stopped near the empty lift shaft and asked him to go ahead. “It was pitch dark and he said he wanted to scare others still climbing the stairs. I said okay and went ahead. However, as I reached the fifth floor I heard screams, “Miraj fell, Miraj fell,” and I rushed down,” added Khan.

Shaikh fell down the lift shaft for four storeys. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Sion Hospital immediately by Khan and their friends. He was immediately shifted to the Emergency Medical Unit of the hospital. Treating doctors said that Shaikh had suffered a severe head injury along with multiple fractures and was put on ventilator. However, within 24 hours of the admission, he succumbed to the injuries on Sunday afternoon.

Police speak
Speaking to mid-day, Balasaheb Jadhav, senior police inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station said that since there was no complaint from the family or friends they didn’t file an FIR. “We have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the case and sent the body for post mortem. Some of the buildings, not all in the colony are occupied,” said Jadhav.
