Mumbai: Father acquitted of murdering minor daughter in 2011

The Dindoshi Sessions Court on Wednesday acquitted a 48-year-old man who was accused of killing his minor daughter. The man was accused of strangulating his 13-year-old daughter to death as he was ashamed of her relationship.

The father, a resident of Marve, Malad, was acquitted due to lack of evidence. The case was based on circumstantial evidence. The two neighbours who deposed in the court were deemed hostile by the prosecution, which had examined 17 witnesses.

The defense argued in the court that, there was no motive behind the murder. There is no establishment of deceased girl’s bad character and so there is no reason to kill the her.

Prosecution’s case dates back to March 15, 2011, when the deceased was alone at home and a boy had come to borrow some money. The neighbors who had seen the boy informed the elder sisters when they came home. The sisters opened the door to see the boy was still inside the house. The boy, however, managed to escape from one of the windows in the house. When the father returned home, the sisters told him about the incident, he then allegedly attacked his younger daughter.

The Malvani police while arresting the father also arrested the two sisters aged 15 and 17. According to police, the family was unhappy with the deceased girl being friendly with any boy and girl was beaten up for this reason.
