A 28-year-old woman died in Gujarat on July 17, allegedly by consuming poison at her in-laws’ place. Shahzia’s brother, Sayyed Yusuf Javed Hussain, (31), told mid-day, “her in-laws murdered her by making her consume poison.” Shahzia’s body was brought to Mumbai on Sunday morning and buried by her family members in the afternoon.

Her brother Hussain, who had gone to Gujarat to collect the body, has registered a case against the in-laws at Chapi police station at Vadgaon, Palanpur, in Gujarat. According to her family members, Shahzia had got married to Shoaib, (31) in March 2013.

Shoaib is a resident of Mehta gaon, Vadgaon, Palanpur in Gujarat. He resides with his parents and three sisters. Her in-laws had not informed her family members about the death and were on their way to the burial ground when they were stopped by Shahzia’s brother Hussain.

Torture
Hussain told mid-day, “Initially for six months, everything was fine. Later the family started demanding money. My sister was being tortured badly. She was abused and physically assaulted. She was forced to stand outside the house for several hours.”

He added, “Shahzia was taunted by her in-laws for not delivering a child, while the problem is with her husband. If she did any cleaning work in the house, her in-laws would make it dirty all over again to harass her.

She was not even given food for Iftaari during Ramzan and they kept her waiting outside. She last spoke to me saying that she is in a very bad condition due to tremendous harassment.” On July 14, Shahzia came with her husband Shoaib to Mumbai, and everything was fine till then.

On the same night, they went back to Gujarat. Shahzia’s in-laws allegedly did not take her home and assaulted her. According to Hussain, on July 16, she was not given food for Iftaari, and her neighbours fed her.

On the night of July 16, Hussain got a call from Mushtaq, a friend, saying that Shahzia had consumed poison, and had been admitted to Mehsana general hospital. Hussain said, “I was not informed till late night and Shoaib’s phone was switched off. On July 17 early morning, I spoke to Shoaib, and he said that Shahzia is fine and out of danger.

However, later, I got a call from Mushtaq asking me to reach Gujarat at the earliest. I reached Gujarat on July 18 early morning and was shocked to find that my sister was already dead and they were about to bury her.” Hussain later filed a complaint with the Chapi police station against the in-laws.
