On October 20, Iqbal Kaskar, brother of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, signed a bond before ACP Mangesh Pote of Dongri division, promising that he would not commit any offence for the next six months.

In February, mid-day had reported that Kaskar had been granted bail in connection with an extortion case registered at JJ Marg police station. However, in June this year Senior Police Inspector Anil Madvi had written to the then-ACP of Dongri Division seeking preventive action against Kaskar.

After receiving a show-cause notice, Kaskar had presented himself at the ACP’s office, along with his advocate Shyam Keswani.

According to a source, Kaskar was not happy with the chapter proceedings initiated against him. This prompted him to sign the bond last week. Had Kaskar not executed the bond, a DCP could take over the case from the ACP and externed the accused from the area. ACP Mangesh Pote of Dongri Division, confirmed the development.

Chapter proceedings are held under Section 110 of the CrPC. When an Executive Magistrate receives information that there is within his local jurisdiction a person who is a habitual offender, the Magistrate may require such a person to showcause as to why he should not be ordered to execute a bond, with sureties, for his good behaviour for a period not exceeding three years.
