Bal Thackeray's elder sister dead

Noted Marathi writer and columnist Sushila Hemantkumar Gupte (91), the elder sister of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, died at the age of 91 in Mumbai yesterday after a brief illness.

Noted Marathi writer and columnist Sushila Hemantkumar Gupte (91), the elder sister of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, died at the age of 91 in Mumbai yesterday after a brief illness.

Bal Thackeray, his son Uddhav and other family members had left for a u00a0brief vacation to Mahabaleshwar yesterday morning, but returned for Gupte's last rites. Gupte is survived by her son Pankaj Gupte, a music director.

Besides penning several novels, Gupte was a popular columnist in the party-run newspaper Saamna, and also contributed to its Diwali special issues.
