Civic body is planning a special squad to monitor water wastage in the city; civic officials will also supervise water audits to check water usage and wastage in each node of the city

19% of Navi Mumbai water supply goes down the drain

In a recent survey conducted by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) this year, it was found that 19 per cent of the total water supplied to the city goes down the drain due to water leakages and illegal connections.

Taking into account the percentage of water going waste, the NMMC is planning a special squad to monitor water wastage in the city. Further, the civic commissioner has asked its officials to supervise water audits across their respective jurisdictions to check the usage and wastage in each node of the city.

Municipal Commissioner, Dinesh Waghmare, said, “Water audit will be conducted through third party approach, while special squads to keep a check on water wastage would be formed shortly. The issue of water wastage was repeatedly highlighted in civic meetings and hence we have planned to take necessary steps.”

Officials from NMMC further said that the move would help improve water distribution, as this year rainfall has been scanty. “The state has received less rainfall this year and hence as a precautionary measure the audit will help us get an overview about the water supply condition and distribution in NMMC region,” said an official from the civic body.
