Five FIRs have been registered at different police stations in connection with the violence, as per police reports.
The clashes erupted on Monday evening in Nagpur’s Mahal area after rumours spread that the holy book of a community was burned during a right-wing protest over Aurangzeb’s tomb. A mob of nearly 1,000 people engaged in large-scale stone-pelting, vandalism, and arson, causing injuries to several police personnel and damaging multiple vehicles and homes.
Nagpur Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that social media was used to incite the violence and appealed to the opposition not to politicise the issue. Bawankule defended the home department, stating that police officers stood between the two communities to prevent further escalation, despite sustaining injuries.
Commissioner Singal confirmed that the situation is currently under control, with police maintaining a strong presence to prevent further unrest. Prohibitory orders have been imposed under Section 144, restricting public gatherings in the affected areas to prevent further escalation.
Authorities are conducting combing operations, identifying those involved using CCTV footage and video evidence. Two vehicles were torched during the violence, and extensive damage was reported in the Mahal area.
Police have appealed to the public to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, and not take the law into their own hands. Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are expected as police continue to identify the culprits involved in the clashes.
