Mumbai Police on Thursday said that it has busted a drugs producing lab after nabbing a drug peddler in Malwani and two people were arrested in connection with the matter.

According to the police, on January 5, the officials of the Malwani Police under the guidance of Senior Inspector Chimaji Adhav spotted a man and upon suspicions stopped him for questioning. His searches allegedly led to a recovery of a gram of mephedrone (MD) also known as Meow Meow and 100 bottles of thinner, a chemical.

"The recovery of so many bottles of thinner raised suspicions of the police officials and they began investigations in the matter," an official said.

The police said, the officials later placed the suspect, a 30-year-old man who was identified as Abrar Shaikh.

"His sustained interrogations gave police officials some crucial clues which were further used to investigate the matter. The investigators further began to gather the technical clues and after verifying the facts in the case raided a drugs producing lab in the city," the official added.

The police said that the Malwani Police officials raided the lab on January 9 and found raw material and other equipment generally used in producing drugs.

The police also arrested a 24-year-old suspect from the spot who was identified as Noor Chowdhary.

With the arrest of both the suspects the police officials also seized drugs and drugs producing equipment, materials, etc. The total value of the seizure is around Rs 1.17 crore. The suspects were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the police said.

Meanwhile, in a similar incident last year, the Mumbai Crime Branch’s Unit IX had in October dismantled a sprawling factory spanning 21,000 square feet in the MIDC Solapur area, which was found to be producing the synthetic drug Mephedrone (MD) on a large scale, the police had earlier said.

The factory, reportedly managed by accused brothers Atul Kishan Gawli and Rahul Kishan Gawli, was capable of churning out 5 kg of Mephedrone at a single time, valued at Rs 10 crore. The raid resulted in the seizure of 8 kg of Mephedrone worth Rs 16 crore, alongside 60 kg of semi-processed drugs estimated at Rs 100 crore, the officials had said.
