The Malad police have arrested a 24-year-old woman for allegedly stealing gold ornaments from her 54-year-old cousin's house at Chincholi Bunder area on the pretext of changing clothes in the bedroom.

According to police sources, Neha Sachin Sajnani stole gold ornaments worth around '12 lakh last month. She is the daughter of the complainant’s
maternal uncle.

Sajnani had been residing in Versova since she got married. However, she and her husband had a falling out, after which she filed for divorce and moved in with another relative at Evershine Nagar in Malad.

On September 24, Sajnani visited the complainant, who gave her some clothes and '12,000, according to the police statement. Sajnani visited her again on September 30 with a bag, asking to use her bedroom to change her clothes. She stayed inside for 20-25 minutes, it added.

It was only on October 9 that the complainant found out that gold ornaments were missing from her cupboard. She searched everywhere in the house, and when she couldn't find the jewellery, she filed a police complaint, an officer said.

The officer said the complainant suspected Sajnani as she was the only outsider to visit her home since September 24.

The Malad police learnt that the accused had been arrested by the Versova police last week for robbing a relative of her in-laws in June.

She was in judicial custody in the Versova case.

On Thursday, the Malad police took custody of Sajnani, who confessed to stealing the jewellery from her cousin as she needed money, said the officer.
The police have recovered several ornaments from her, the officer stated.
