Divya Sandesara had called an info-providing company as she wanted to send household goods to a southeast Asian country; she says cops refused to file a cheating case

A Dahisar woman lost over Rs 40,000 after she called a technology company to seek the contact details of a few movers and packers. The woman alleged that the police refused to take action claiming they would register a case only if the lost amount is more than Rs 1 lakh.

Divya Sandesara, who lives near Shakti Nagar at Dahisar East, said her husband Dhaval has moved to a Southeast Asian country for business and she would be shifting there. Sandesara said she wanted to send a few household goods to her husband and called the information provider on January 4. Within no time, she got a call from a person who identified himself as an employee of Trinity International Courier at Cargo Services.

“The caller told me they would charge Rs 42,500 to ship the goods. The next day, a delivery boy named Rajnikant Tiwari showed up saying he had been sent on behalf of ‘We Fast’ app to collect the goods. Tiwari said he would deliver the box to Trinity,” Sandesara told mid-day.
The woman made the payment online and handed over the goods to Tiwari, who said he was a Nalasopara resident. “I trusted Tiwari because he showed him his ID card and my details had been fed in his app. Since he didn’t give me a receipt, I called the person from Trinity who said it would be sent. But then he stopped taking my calls. When I checked with the company, they said they had no such business,” she said.
Sandesara said she was left even more frustrated when she visited Dahisar police station to file a complaint. “I gave an application to PSI Shivaji Narwade but he said they register an FIR only when the amount is more than Rs 1 lakh.”

The woman said she called up Tiwari to find out what exactly had happened after he collected the box from her home. “Tiwari said the person cancelled the booking after he left her place and asked him to hand it over near Hub Mall at Goregaon East. I warned Tiwari that I would inform the police. Surprisingly he called back on January 9 to say my goods had been found near the gate of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. He brought the box to my place. I’m sure he is involved in this fraud.”
Tiwari told mid-day, “The person from Trinity asked me to deliver the good on a personal level and not through the We Fast app. I did that way as the caller promised to pay me more. Later, I learnt that the person had used me to cheat the woman. I apologised to her for my mistake and returned the goods to her.” Tiwari, however, had no answer as to how the goods landed near the national park gate.
Shivaji Narwade of Dahisar police station said, “There is an RBI rule that an FIR is registered only if the lost amount is above Rs 1 lakh. We are investigating the matter and the woman has got back her goods. We also questioned the delivery boy and found that he had not done anything wrong.”
But Senior Inspector Pravin Patil of the same police station differed with Narwade. “There is no rule of registering an FIR only the cheated amount is more than Rs 1 lakh. I will check with PSI Shivaji Narwade and get back to you. We will also help the woman register an FIR if she was cheated.”
