Rising humidity levels thanks to September’s muggy heat can wreak havoc on your carefully applied make-up

It’s that time of the year when you’re never quite sure of whether it’s going to be a sunny day or if a downpour will catch you unawares. Even as the soaring humidity induces copious amounts of sweat, it is still possible to wear make-up without your products sliding off your face. “The trick is to use the right products and to keep your look relatively simple,” shares make-up artist Sneh Sharma. She recommends the following steps to lock in your look.

>> Minimal skincare: Using heavy or greasy formulas or too many products can make matters worse. Instead, use water-based or gel moisturisers under your make-up to minimise sweat, while keeping your skin adequately hydrated. Don’t skip the sunscreen; choose one that has a lighter consistency.

>> Prime the shine: Primers add grip to your base, ensuring that your make-up stays fresh for longer. Several brands have come up with waterproof primers that work well in muggy weather conditions. Primer also acts as a barrier between the skin and make-up products, to keep your skin in mint condition for longer.

>> The right foundation: When it comes to your base, less is more. High coverage looks are also high on maintenance; it may help to apply the foundation with a clean brush only in areas that require some coverage. Use lightweight, waterproof products, or just skip the foundation altogether in favour of a tinted moisturiser paired with concealer. Seal your base with a light dusting of translucent powder, which you can apply with a clean, fluffy brush. Doing so will ensure that your make-up doesn’t move or melt.

>> Cream over powder: Powder combined with sweat can create a cake-y, unflattering finish. Cream or liquid products, whether on your cheekbones or your eyelids, will wear off more evenly. For your cheeks, a blush stain layered under cream blush can give you a fresh, flushed appearance. Prime your lids before using liquid or cream eye shadows and use waterproof eyeliners and mascaras.

>> Set it right: A good setting spray helps to keep make-up intact. Alcohol-free formulas are preferable since the alcohol content can dry up and crack your make-up. When you step out, carry blotting papers to absorb extra oil and shine.
