On the face of it, the hit (but gory) Netflix show Squid Game doesn’t exactly stand out for its fashion choices. But then, fans across the world have been lapping up the signature green tracksuits and white slip-ons — the ensemble worn by the lead characters. “The popularity of tracksuits isn’t surprising, considering how comfortable and versatile they are; the importance of these two traits has become especially heightened during the pandemic,” says fashion stylist Mitali Ambekar.

“While choosing a tracksuit, remember that less is more. Always opt for the right fit. Further, while baggy oversized fits are trending right now, make sure that at least one separate [either the pants or the jacket] is of the right size, to avoid adding visual bulk,” Ambekar advises. And while the most obvious way is to wear the two separates together, you can change it up by styling the track pants with a crop top and then layer the jacket on top. Add dainty accessories to soften the look, she suggests. Another interesting way to style a tracksuit is to choose an oversized track jacket and pair it with shorts.

For an athleisure look, pair the track pants with a sports bra. Track suits also make for great airport outfits, since they’re extremely functional. Here, pair a hooded track set with a comfy t-shirt. You can also wear a turtleneck top with baggy track pants to create a more contemporary chic aesthetic.

To elevate a basic set from utilitarian to glamourous, pair your tracksuit with high heels or knee-high boots. “If you’re a fashion risk-taker, choose a set in bright or neon colours. Busy prints and eye-catching motifs, especially in luxe fabrics, will ensure you stand out,” Ambekar signs off.
