Often regarded as a vintage throwback, the patchwork trend has truly come into its own during the pandemic

Last year, in the early days of the pandemic, as people grappled with the complexities of life under lockdown, two trends soared in popularity — DIY and comfort-chic. Patchwork, which seems like a natural marriage of these two, soon followed suit, with designers across the world embracing the trend with gusto. “There’s been a conscious move away from flashy ensembles to clothes that seem to envelope you in a warm, comforting hug. Patchwork, which is a throwback to the 1970s, was once considered anti-fashion, given its more homely, rustic origins. But now, with smarter silhouettes and interesting combinations, this trend has truly come into its own,” says Jannat Khan, a fashion blogger.

Make it your own

Considering the DIY origins of the trend, don’t hesitate to get crafty with pieces that you already own. “You can use any patches that you have handy and sew them in interesting patterns on solid pieces,” shares Srimal, who has created her own patchwork saree. “Remember, however, that the patchwork will always be the focal point of your look; the rest of your look, including your accessories, should therefore highlight and not compete with the patchwork,” she concludes.

If you’re a risk-taker while dressing up, you could lean into the vintage appeal of this trend and wear it in the form of peasant dresses. Wear these with layered necklaces and flats. Make sure to choose flowing, light fabrics to keep the look wearable and fuss-free, says Srimal.

Play safe with denim

“When in doubt, stick to patchwork jeans or denim dresses. This creates a more tonal look if you pick a piece that uses different shades of blue. To keep your look from appearing too vintage and dated, pick pieces that have distressed elements or have interesting crafted patches sewn on to them,” says Khan. Ensure the look is edgy with accessories such as combat boots and bucket hats, and skip the jewellery, she advises.

Pair with neutrals

If you’re choosing separates, avoid very baggy pieces as these can be visually overwhelming. Instead, choose more streamlined silhouettes that accentuate your shape, and tone these down with solid pieces. “A smart way to wear patchwork would be in the form of a tailored jacket that you throw over a monochrome fitted top and bottoms. You could also wear a patchwork skirt with a neutral top,” says fashion influencer Indu Srimal.
