Fancy some fun in the sun? Don’t forget your sunglasses, which can transform your look while keeping you protected. A celebrity stylist elaborates
Jennifer Lopez rocks two trends with her oversized, mirrored sunglasses
Few accessories are as essential during the summer months as a trusted pair (or a few) of sunglasses. From protecting your eyes to upping your style game, there’s a lot your sunnies can do for you. But, if you’ve been shopping around for a new pair, you’ll realise the sea of choices that present themselves to you in a bewildering mix of sizes, shapes, colour and finishes. To help simplify the selection process, we reached out to celebrity stylist Mitali Ambekar for a few handy tips.

The right occasion
Anushka Sharma matches her white sunglasses to her outfit
With the mob wife aesthetic trending on social media, oversized glasses are back in a big way. They are oversized, they cover almost half your face and they’re not for the faint-hearted. This style works best for airport looks or outdoor day events. Maximalists can take this style to the next level by sporting a pair that has a tortoiseshell frame. Pool parties and beach vacations demand mirrored, oversized styles, says Ambekar. For those keen to experiment, Y2K-themed coloured lenses are back and you can take your pick from a variety of colours that range from rose to green. However, for a more cohesive look, Ambekar recommends picking a colour from your outfit and matching it to your glasses.

Formal gatherings are best served by sleek styles such as aviators and cat-eye sunglasses, she notes. Another trend that’s rapidly catching on are club-master frames that are thick at the top (to mimic your eyebrows) and thinner at the bottom. This style looks sophisticated and works well for formal or work events. “Sunglasses with a glossy finish will add weight to your face, as compared to a matte, one-tone alternative,” Ambekar adds.
Be practical

In summer, it’s essential to opt for good-quality sunglasses with polarised and UV-protectant lenses. “Polarised lenses are specially treated to reduce the glare from reflective surfaces such as water, snow, and roads. They enhance visibility and are ideal for outdoor activities,” explains Ambekar. If you wear prescription glasses regularly, you could opt for clip-on sunglasses that attach to your regular eyeglasses and offer you the best of visibility, protection and style.
Face the facts
Sonam Kapoor’s angular face is softened by a rounded frame
A key guideline to follow when picking a new pair of sunglasses is to “never mimic the shape of your face,” emphasises Ambekar. She explains that if you have a round face, reach for angular shapes such as squares and rectangles instead of more curved styles. On the other hand, if you have a well-defined, angular or square face, a more curved shape such as round or oval styles will help to soften the angles. Finally, if you have a heart-shaped face with a leaner chin, opt for aviator or cat-eye frames. An oval face shape is considered as balanced and can thus experiment with all types of frames. “When in doubt, always opt for classic styles such as wayfarers, which are both timeless and fashionable,” she adds.
