Artist and designer Sonaksha Iyengar speaks of time as a concept that moves quite differently for those belonging to neuroqueer and disabled communities. “For a lot of us who are neuroqueer and disabled, the pandemic has made time feel non-linear, sort of like it went mad,” reveals Iyengar. Building on this idea, Iyengar, along with a group of similar artists and writers, recently put out a 46-page illustrated book titled Three Ways Of Unpeeling Time, with essays and visuals that talk about these experiences.

The content dives into topics like grief and anxiety, with essays from three writers who explore and detail their personal narratives through the pandemic. Each essay is accompanied by vivid illustrations, a few by Iyengar as well. “My art influences are largely from lived experiences. For years now, I’ve been trying to turn what I feel into art as a way to communicate. I felt like colour and vivid imagery was a way to put forth these experiences,” they add.

“This is a team project that we’re creating with the organisation I work with called Mutual Aid India (MAI). We were thinking of different ways to raise funds, because we realised that people’s attention has shifted and this concept of time kept coming up in conversations within our team. So we felt it would be nice to put together something like this. In the book, we speak about time and our experiences with it, especially in the past year using art and essays,” shares Iyengar. All proceeds from the book will be donated to MAI’s relief efforts for trans communities in Manipur.
