As young collegians get ready to host two of the city's biggest cultural festivals, here are the top events you should watch out for

The memories associated with a college fest are often tangible. They come with multiple T-shirts that bear an official designation — volunteer, organiser, or chairperson, that sometimes you carry home and they are then converted into the next kitchen towel. But at least you find some comfort in knowing that the backprint makes it to your résumé. It's also true that festivals are more than just souvenirs. A break from the monotony of college life, an excuse for a missed deadline, the discovery of a friend (or maybe more), what better way to call college home?

Malhar, St. Xavier's College
Malhar is one of Asia's oldest intercollegiate festivals dating back to 1979. In accordance with the college celebrating 150 years, events have been revamped to suit this year's theme — A Time Turner. The first day of the festival dedicated to hosting eminent speakers was traditionally called Conclave. Now, been renamed to Confluence, it includes sessions with a strong line-up of speakers including Nadir Godrej, Orkut Buyukkokten and Anurag Kashyap, as well as a concert where Kabir Cafe and The F16s will be performing.
"Since this marks 40 years of the festival, we wanted to tie in the cultural history of Malhar with our events and play on the theme of time. For example, Action Replay is a theatre event that revolves around the thriller genre. Participants will perform their acts with reverse timelines but have to also retain their original storyline," says vice chairperson, Simran Lobo. Other new events include Trap Me If You Can, an escape room event, and Magic Mic, an English rap event.

Umang, Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics
Currently in its 18th year, Umang hosts interesting events that also include a treasure hunt aptly called Mumbai Meri Jaan. They have a series of events themed around corporate life, too. There is a corporate lunch where participants can showcase their convincing skills, and Mathe-Mania to display your number crunching talent.
This year, there is also a Lip Sync Battle that allows participants to do a fun imitation of their favourite music artiste. Speaking to us about how the idea came to be, Riya Mankar, head of the music and contemporary arts department, says, "Lip syncing essentially is a combination of performance and music. It is a platform to showcase your imitation as well as your vocal skills. Plus, there are no restrictions on genre or language."
