A new Bandra restaurant gets its Mexican fare right but with little space to sit, it makes for a better takeaway

Restaurant Review: Savour Mexican flavours at this Bandra eatery

Food: Tasty
Service: Quick
Ambiance    Simple

After a long day at work, we rang up The House of Chipotle, a new eatery off Hill Road in Bandra, to check if we’d get a table, considering they are listed as a takeout and delivery service on a restaurant search engine. We received a forthright reply from one of the owners, “There are only six chairs and it’s a rough seating but please do come, the food is good.” Taking his word for it, we stepped into the matchbox-size, no-frills eatery (the owners plan to expand it soon). Though limited, the eatery serves an interesting mix of Mexican cuisine — soft shell tacos, nachos, grilled paninis, rice bowls and burgers, too. What caught our fancy were the vivid images of ingredients (one of the sauces is called Salsa Raja) and a dekko into what the dish would look like. Not bad, we thought.

Burger binge
We began with Tex Mex Nachos (Rs 150). A bed of crunchy nachos piled with cheese sauce, sour cream, refried beans and Pico de Gallo (onion-tomato salad), the spicy-tangy dish was loaded with flavours and polished off in minutes.

While we were keen to try their paninis and tacos, they were sold out by then. Considering the start-up is week-old and we had dropped by post dinner time, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and settled for THC Chicken Burger (Rs 210).

And it didn’t disappoint. Packed with a succulent grilled chicken breast, spicy chipotle sauce, sour cream and lettuce, the sesame-pecked buns were soft and complete melt-and-in-mouth. Hands down, one of the best buns we had in a long time. We couldn’t help but order another one, this time, a Hash Brown Burger (Rs 130). We loved this version of the crispy potato fritter, which made a hit pair with tangy onions, chipotle sauce, and the heavenly buns.

Rice superbowl
Served in two sizes — Large and XL — the Chipotle Rice Bowl is said to be the eatery’s signature dish. We called for a paneer variety (Rs 260). With a portion sufficient for three, the bowl had a melee of ingredients including coriander lime rice, chunks of cottage cheese, corn salsa, refried beans, avocado, red pepper, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, salsa raja and chipotle sauce. A dig into the bowl and a burst of flavours greeted us. The well-cooked rice blended well with the sauces and the corn salsa added a nice crunch to the dish.

While the chipotle sauce (made from smoke-dried jalapeno) featured in most of the fare, it wasn’t overpowering, and thus, the flavours in each dish came through. With pocket-friendly prices, bagfuls of flavours and generous portions, The House of Chipotle does justice to Mexican cuisine. Now, if only, they’d do something about their rickety chairs. We suggest, you try a takeaway or better still, order in, they deliver right up to Vile Parle.
