Mumbai food: Popular takeaway and delivery eateries

Crystal Punjabi Tadka
Where: 2, Building A, Shinde Building Compound, next to Phoenix Towers, SB Marg, Lower Parel. Call: 24990099

Non-Vegetarian Mix Platter at Crystal Punjabi Tadka

Lowdown: When Crystal first opened in Lower Parel, the pricing took us by surprise, especially since it was particularly steep compared to its iconic parent outlet in Charni Road. Still, we kept going back. The reason was simple: the food tasted better than any of the other budget restaurants in the neighbourhood. However, their latest edition a non-vegetarian section to their menu, failed to impress. Despite this, the Non-Vegetarian Mix Platter (pictured above) costing Rs 425 was a succulent fare. Chilli Pepper Prawns

Lowdown: Apart from the big-ticket eateries, this buzzing part of Vashi is a gastronome’s delight with many lesser-known pit stops to choose from. Our reviewer found three value-for-money eateries. As we toiled away at our office in Vashi’s Sector 17, the urge to embark on a foodie adventure emerged, like an epiphany. So, staying away from the big names of the area, we headed to the not-so-established names only to discover that we were to hit jackpot at JK Chambers. (Read more)

The Wok
Where: P 11, Raghuvanshi Mills, Lower Parel. Call: 7045351560. Time: 10 am to 10 pm

The Wok

Lowdown: The Wok offers Asian food on-the-run, just as we like it, spicy and pocket-friendly. All you have to do is select your vegetables, protein (egg, chicken, chicken sausages, paneer or tofu, they don’t offer sea food as yet) noodles or rice and sauces. This preparation is called the Veg Box (Rs 150) or the Non Veg Box (Rs 180). They can create even a stir-fry version, sans the carbs (Rs 200 for veg, Rs 220 for non-veg). (Read more)

Divino Treats

Divino Treats

Lowdown: Residents in Versova vouch for homemaker Varsha Sejpal’s home-run company Divino Treats that has been offering a variety of eggless confectioneries and cakes for a while now. She has also introduced herbed butters as well as healthy oatmeal breakfast jars and emphasises that quantities of items can be customised as per the client’s needs. (Read more)

Heartbakers and the Pizza Guy
Where: Ground floor, Gagangiri Apartments, off Carter Road, Bandra (W). Timings: 6 pm to 11.30 pm (Weekends: 6pm to 12.30pm, Wednesdays closed). Call: 9820597296

Heartbakers and the Pizza Guy

Lowdown: Run by a brother-sister duo and featuring just six pizzas on its menu, this Carter Road-based pizza place has a homely vibe and this extends to their pizzas as well. Just two weeks old, we realised that they are still figuring out aspects like the packaging of their pizza boxes. Most pizzas here have a single topping, which is easier to handle with the pizza-by-the-slice concept. The place does not currently do home deliveries. (Read more)

Falafel Shawarma

Lowdown: Cairo Grill exemplifies Bandra’s fast food QSR (quick service restaurant) experience with delish Lebanese cuisine in a busy part of this foodie-friendly suburb. The Falafel Shawarma (Rs 140) (pictured) was a delish start. The Falafels were soft and flavourful, and better than most others we’ve tucked into. The Smoked Chicken Shawarma (Rs 150) was regular fare; thankfully, the meat was well done. What works for Cairo Grill’s shawarmas is that the sauces and pickled veggies are not stuffed in excess; the proportions were just right. (Read more)

Lowdown: Conceptualised by cousins Sinhaar Rodrigues and Daniel Braganza, while on a weekend hike, they offer two variants of granola (which they call Crunch Rocks) and cookies (which contain eggs).Braganza tells us that the recipes have been conceptualised by his aunt Prema Rodrigues, who also runs Prema's Kitchen, that supplies caramel custard and chocolate mousse to Café Mondegar, Café Leopold and Café Churchill. Mr. Chow's
Where: Shop no. 5, Mukesh House, Hatishkar Marg, Prabhadevi. Call: 24334551. Time: 11.30 am to 3 pm and 6.30 pm to 11 pm

Mr. Chow

Lowdown: Mr. Chow’s is a relatively lesser-known eatery with three branches across the city — Colaba, Prabhadevi and Bandra. They promise healthy Chinese delicacies without the infamous taste enhancer, Ajinomoto, and their fare is cooked in sunflower oil. (Read more)

Snackosaur

Snackosaur

Lowdown: Snackosaur is not the monster your kids and you should run away from. On the contrary, he’s the friendly, Casper-sort of ghost, the good one; one, which will rescue you from unhealthy eating habits. Each box promises to present a new set of goodies. At the moment, you can’t choose what you get in your box. If you like a particular item, you can go to the a la carte section and order the quantity you like, separately. You can expect barbeque edamame, strawberry wasabi peas, dehydrated dried fruit mixes, granola bars, healthy cookies, and other dry snacks that promise to be delicious. (Read more)

Masalchi Ustad
Where:
Sherly Rajan Road, near The Bagel Shop, Bandra (W). Call: 9029077516/7/8/9. Time: 12 pm to 12 am

Masalchi Ustad

Lowdown: Aromas of fried garlic and smoke from the tandoor greeted us as we waited for our order at Masalchi Ustad, Bandra’s new takeaway place. Started by the folks behind Juhu’s popular Jantar Mantar takeout service, this space is sandwiched between two photocopy shops in a bylane. (Read more)

(L-R) Founders of Grab.in, Jignesh Patel, Nishant Vora and Prakshit Sanghvi

Lowdown: In modern e-commerce ventures, everything is automated — from billing and processing an order to dispatching it to its destination. This also allows the consumer to track every movement of their purchase. Grab.in makes the same technology available for the food industry offering eateries a grid of delivery boys who get their food delivered to customers within 20 minutes from dispatch with real-time tracking along the way.
