Instead of distracting patrons with well-done interiors, Blanco's team needs to give their food a relook

It's hard to keep track of the number of spaces that open and shut in Andheri’s busy Lokhandwala neighbourhood. When we first heard about Blanco, a Santorini-inspired, Grecian-themed rooftop bar and eatery, it piqued our interest.

The interiors impressed us. The 4,000-sq ft open space with Aztec patterns and umbrella-shaped steel lights gave it a relaxed vibe. Patrons can pick low seating, private cabanas, step seating or dispersed tables for two. We spotted vine-like bougainvillea and wild orchids on the monochromatic walls. A larger part of the crowd indulged in hookahs and beer pints.

The food menu focuses on Mediterranean and European cuisine with a twist. From a spread of soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, egg dishes, appetisers, pastas and pizzas, we chose Bruschetta ('243). The crispy, fresh bread came topped with perfectly seasoned tomato, bell peppers, mushroom and cheese. Next, we ordered the Cold Pizza ('324). We enjoyed the mix of cold cuts, cheese and veggies with a not–so-sweet pizza sauce but the base was tough to bite into. When we complained, the chef offered an apology.

The Chicken House Steak ('387) was slightly better. Served with grilled veggies (carrot, beans and broccoli) and creamy mashed potato, the bland chicken was salvaged by a smoky barbecue sauce.

We washed it down with Floral Cup ('279). Served in a teapot, the combination of gin and chilled smoking tea, poured into a glass of ice, lifted our spirits after an underwhelming meal. Apparently, there were no desserts available that day.

If you’re looking for a relaxed evening to chill with friends over a hookah or a drink, Blanco might work for you. If you’re looking for a gourmet meal to tuck into, avoid.
