The band was formed in 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania and was born with the desire to create music that transcended traditional cultural boundaries. The group has captured the experience of growing up with competing Eastern and Western cultures.

Its band members have consistently been at the forefront of South Asian-Western fusion. Their compositions are primarily sung in English or Hindi, but certain songs include Arabic, Punjabi, Kannada, and Tamil lyrics as well. Their music attracts fans from all backgrounds, and in turn they have also been influenced by a wide range of cultures.
