Sound check

We have all enjoyed jamming out to our favourite song in the shower, or singing at the top of our lungs in the car. It's easy, after all, to dance to the tune of others. But how about trying your hand at making your own melody?

Mastering songwriting is difficult, especially when the goal is to elicit emotion from the audience. "While everyone may not be born with skill, I believe we are all definitely born with the power to create - that's what sets the human race apart!" suggests Vidhya Gopal, the Mumbai-based classical Hindustani musician leading this workshop. For amateur musicians, poets, and artistes, it's time to shine at a songwriting workshop, Journey of a Song. Collaborate with others to analyse examples from Indian and western compositions, and discover your unique voice. "There isn't a dearth of skilled singers today but what we lack is original compositions," reveals Gopal.

The final project - an original song of your handcrafted lyrics and melodies - can be taken home as a proud accomplishment. "Individual expression is what is truly the essence of art!" Gopal beams.
