East India Comedy (EIC), the seven-member comedy collective, was one of the first groups in India to use social media and YouTube regularly to upload performance videos and with much fanfare. Now, they have decided take it a notch higher. Till September 18, they will release one performance video every day, which they have termed a stand-up marathon.

The first video features Azeem Banatwalla, a member of EIC, poking fun at the shopping habits of men and women and has been viewed over 60,000 times already. It is understandable given the way he kills it with an anecdote about his visit to Zara, when his wife wanted to buy a birdcage veil (worn in funerals in England) and he tried to reason with her.

Another member, Angad Singh Ranyal, says that there is more exciting stuff to come. "We have been putting up stuff for over three years now and wanted to do something special. This series is an attempt to reach out to as many people as possible, giving them a lot of comedy to watch," he says.

So, what's new about these videos? They're different from web series comedy or similar storytelling formats as they have the same production format of a stand-up show with a stage and an audience. The videos, Banatwalla explains, take between three and five months to prepare. "When we are working on a video it takes much longer than a stand-up show. All members read what we are going to perform and then, we put forward our best work," he explains.

The response, too, is different from a live show. "In a live show, we feed on the immediate response we get from the audience. For the online format, one goes through the long process of uploading the work and then waiting for response, which is not always kind. But, minus the trolls, we have received tremendous positive response online," Ranwal says.

EIC consists of five other comedians — Sorabh Pant, Sahil Shah, Sapan Verma, Kunal Rao and Atul Khatri. All the members are between the ages of 25 and 48. This, according to Sahil Shah, is a great advantage as their comedy has perspectives of people of different ages. On whether they want to break a record through their marathon, he guffaws and says, "If there is one of that kind, please let me know. We will definitely apply."
