From a dystopian drama in Leila (2019) to a political fare in Maharani (2021), Huma Qureshi is enjoying exploring diverse genres, one story at a time. Fortunately, Mithya came her way at a time when she was seeking a psychological thriller to add to her resume.

“I am a huge fan of psychological thrillers, but I had never explored this space. So, Mithya excited me. It’s a well-written six-episode series,” begins the actor, who plays a Hindi literature professor in the ZEE5 series. The thriller sees her character accuse a student — essayed by Avantika Dassani — of plagiarism, sparking a psychological combat between the two.

Qureshi says the onset of pandemic made her reassess her career and impacted her choice of projects thereon. “Since life was so uncertain [at the time], I constantly asked myself: What do I want to leave behind? What if a project is my last? It has to be the best. Since then, I have been approaching everything with [passion]. When I get an offer, I don’t over-think anymore; instead, I jump into it and give it my best shot.”

Among her endeavours that bore fruit is Maharani. With the first season received well, the actor has begun filming the second edition of the political drama. “An actor’s life is [dynamic]. Here, I am shooting in Bhopal, while promoting Mithya and talking about that process. [But getting in and out of characters] is my job. Once I wear a sari, bindi and sindoor, I get into the world of Maharani.”
