Marathi actor Priya Bapat: ‘There’s always pressure to prove yourself’

Despite delivering a hit with Nagesh Kukunoor’s City of Dreams (2019), Marathi actor Priya Bapat had to wait before the Hindi film industry recognised her potential. This year, however, she enjoys a string of releases—from Riteish Deshmukh-starrer Visfot and friendship drama Raat Jawaan Hai to the anthology on mental health, Zindaginama, on SonyLIV. Happy about the change in tide, Bapat says, “This is the first time since I started working in Hindi that I’ve had three massive releases.” The actor shares she has often rejected several projects while waiting for the right scripts.  “Even in Marathi cinema, I choose my work consciously. I’ve had to wait a lot for the right kind of projects and avoid getting typecast. After City of Dreams, I was offered many lesbian roles. But when makers believe in you, things happen. That’s why I’m grateful to all the creators who’ve shown belief in me,” she says, adding that she was delighted when director Aditya Sarpotdar saw a Bihari woman in her for Zindaginama. “Someone was ready to believe that I could play a Bihari despite being a Maharashtrian. I’m an urban woman, so imagining me as a villager who’s rooted and unable to express her pain was thrilling. I took it as a challenge. I had to [convey suffering from PTSD] with more expressions and fewer dialogues,” says Bapat.  Confident that the series will spark a conversation about mental health, Bapat opens up about her journey with mental well-being. She sought professional help after caregiving for her ailing mother for three years began taking a toll. “It began with accepting that mental illness exists. There’s always pressure to prove yourself in this profession. Even after working in Marathi cinema for two decades, I have to prove myself with every film. You feel exhausted and tired. Sometimes, you even doubt yourself. During those days, I always turned to my husband [Umesh Kamat] for support. But when my mother fell ill, I reached out for outside help because that’s the first time I realised how absolutely exhausted I was as a caregiver. I took a couple of counselling sessions that really helped me,” she shares.

Seema Sajdeh introduces her boyfriend on new season of FLOBW

Seema Sajdeh is one of the wives of the trending reality show 'Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives'. The third season of the show saw the entry of the Delhi socialites joining the Mumbai Bollywood wives (Maheep Kapoor, Bhavana Panday, Neelam Kothari, Seema). The two divas share the struggles of going through a divorce and its impact on their kids.  On the other hand, Maheep Kapoor is seen talking about how Seema has moved on in life including shifting her base to the Lower Parel area in Mumbai away from her residence. At one point, Seema also mentions noticing a painting on the lobby of the building where Tiger Shroff lives. To this, the other ladies inquire whom she is meeting in Tiger Shroff's residential building. However, by the finale episode of the season, Seema reveals that she has moved on in life and is dating a man named Vikram Ahuja. In the last episode, she also introduces him to her OG gang.  Interestingly, Seema was engaged to Vikram before tying the knot with actor and filmmaker Sohail Khan.  What Seema Sajdeh said about ending 24-year marriage with Sohail Khan Seema and Sohail fell in love and eloped got married. They tied the knot in 1998 when they were in their early 20s. They filed for a divorce in 2022 and were living separately for a couple of years before that. As long as it doesn’t hurt anyone’s feelings, " she said.  In the same interview, she was asked if there was a point when she felt like walking out of the marriage. She said that there was and she was separated from her husband for five years before they applied for divorce. “Why should I blame him, it suited both of us. Our son Nirvan was at that age where he didn’t want it but there came a time when I had to choose between my marriage and my son. My son was going down a path that I was very scared of. Nirvan Khan and Seema Sajdeh

Seema Sajdeh opens up to her son about moving on after divorce

Seema Sajdeh, Maheep Kapoor, Bhavana Panday and Neelam Kothari Soni weren’t exactly excited about including three outsiders in Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives, after fronting the past two seasons. Were they feeling territorial? Maybe, admits Sajdeh. “We were a little resistant because we four can be clan-ish. We’ve been friends for long. You are in your comfort zone when you reach your 40s-50s, and to let new people in your life is daunting. But as we hung out with each other more, I had a lot of fun,” says the fashion designer of her new co-stars, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, Kalyani, and Shalini Passi. The third season sees a face-off between the Bollywood personalities and the Delhi socialites. Sajdeh enjoyed witnessing Sahni, daughter to Neetu Kapoor and the late Rishi Kapoor, making her screen debut with the Netflix series. “I’ve known her for years, and had attended her wedding. She is a total hoot.” In the course of the past two editions, Sajdeh’s personal life has undergone a change. She separated from actor-filmmaker Sohail Khan in 2022, after 24 years of marriage. In the latest season, she is seen speaking to her elder son, Nirvan Khan, about moving on in life after her divorce. Sajdeh reflects, “He is like my best friend. When I have to make an important decision, the number one approval I need is of my son. I want him to look up to his mother. I want him to understand his mother’s journey. If there is one person I can be transparent with, it’s him.”

Neelam Kothari Soni

Neelam Kothari asked husband Samir Soni ‘how to kiss on camera’

Bollywood actress Neelam Kothari Soni may have returned to the screen space with the reality show ‘Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives’, but the stint that allowed the icon to show her acting prowess decades later was ‘Made In Heaven’ season 2 which also featured her husband Samir Soni. Those who have watched the show are aware of Neelam braving a liplock, something she’d never done before. Neelam speaks exclusively to mid-day.com recalling how it all fell into place thanks to Zoya Akhtar.  Neelam Kothari Soni on her liplock scene in ‘Made In Heaven 2’ Neelam and her husband Samir featured in the second season of the popular web series ‘Made In Heaven’. It was a big leap for the star who had never kissed on screen. She recalls, “I was always Miss Proper with my necklines, with my fully covered self and no exposing. Zoya narrated the script to me and she was like ‘Neelam, there's a kissing scene’. And I'm dying to work with Zoya Akhtar. She was like, ‘But relax it's with your husband’. So I was like okay if I'm going to do something bold and different why not with my husband.”           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Neelam (@neelamkotharisoni) When asked if it was awkward despite your spouse, given all the cameras and crew looking at your supposedly intimate moment, a blushing Neelam says, “Before our scene, I actually asked Samir, ‘How do you kiss for the camera?’ He's like, ‘Don't be ridiculous, you're embarrassing me.’” Neelam adds that since the chemistry was there, they finished the scene in about two takes.  Neelam Kothari Soni opens up on cracking jokes on herself  In the reality series, Neelam has been extremely candid about herself. From getting fillers on camera to confessing her excessive use of bronzer to look tanned, this queen knows the art to be unserious. “That's the only way reality is going to work. You've got to be yourself you've got to have fun and you've just got to own it. People will laugh at you, will think you're silly but at the end of the day there'll be people out there who will say kudos. One thing keeps on going through my brain when I'm doing this show just don't take yourself so seriously,” she concludes. ‘Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives’ season 3 is set to premiere on October 18 on Netflix.
