Is there a dearth of new stories? Or are writers too lazy to develop original material? Ekta Kapoor has kick-started the trend of re-creating her own daily soaps, which began with Kasautii Zindagii Kay. She then announced the remake of Pavitra Rishta and now, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. If only real life was like a daily soap and offered do-overs.

When Ekta decided to make a mature love story with Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar in 2011, it resulted in the charming Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. With the ever-adorable Ram paired with the superlative Tanwar, it was the perfect story of getting a second chance at love.

Cut to 2021: Ekta ropes in Nakuul Mehta and Disha Parmar for the remake. Now, this is a smart casting. The pair is tried and tested with the 2012 show, Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyara Pyara. Post Ishqbaaaz, Mehta’s popularity has only soared and Parmar has been in news for her real-life romance and wedding with singer and Bigg Boss contestant, Rahul Vaidya. Ardent fans will lap up this pairing without a doubt. The good bit is that this on-screen couple actually has great chemistry.

For a dose of nostalgia, the characters are still called Ram and Priya. He is a rich and successful businessman. Although betrayed by his first, he remains loyal to her and carries the torch of ‘Ek tarfa pyaar’. Priya, again betrayed by love and the men in her life, is a tad bitter, but practical to a fault. She is the sole caretaker of the family after her father leaves them for another woman and the hope of a son.

The show is moving with time. It addresses body shaming, anxiety and the reality of urban marriages. Mehta and Parmar put their best foot forward as they carry the show on their shoulders. Their conviction in their characters almost makes you forget Kapoor and Tanwar for a moment or two. Ajay Nagrath and Aanchal Khurana fail to live up to the chemistry that was originally created by Jai Kalra and Tarana. Supporting actors Shubhaavi Choksey (Ram’s step-mother), Pranav Misshra (Priya’s cousin), Abhay Bhargava (Priya’s father), Alefia Kapadia (Priya’s sister) lend adequate support.

With the show starting on a promising note, this writer hopes that the makers don’t repeat the same mistakes and take easy routes to raise TRPs. If the show continues to be relatable without indulging in melodrama that is a television staple, it may well surpass its original.
